In this talk, BIID President Charles Leon will chair the panel with BIID members and panellists Anna Burles, Ciara Langley and Mathew Freeman, who will be discussing how to get the most from working with an interior designer. They will be exploring the benefits of working with a professional designer, where to start your research in finding the right designer for your project, the briefing process and how to get the best of the relationship through varied viewpoints, case studies and shared experiences.
Charles Leon is President of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). Charles trained as a theatre designer and began his professional career working for the National Theatre and the English National Opera, designing stage sets for theatre, opera and ballet in the UK and abroad. This led naturally into designing for film, working on several feature productions for Golan Globus and Working Title. In 1988, he was invited to join the UK’s foremost international hotel design company where he remained for five years, working on luxury hotels across Europe. In 1994, Charles established his own design practice, Charles Leon Associates which specialised in hospitality and residential design, working mostly with entrepreneurs and hotel developers. In 2010, he was joined by Nicholas Black and in 2014 they formed the partnership Leon Black.
Charles joined the BIID council following the 2013 merger with the Interior Design Association (IDA), where he was formerly Chairman. He has led the BIID Education Committee, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (RSA) and is also a guest lecturer at Middlesex University. Charles is renowned for his captivating lectures, talks and seminars on the theory of design and design thinking, and is regularly in demand as a speaker at design events and conferences, sharing his expert knowledge.
Anna Burles is the co-Founder of Run For The Hills, an award-winning London design studio. She trained at KLC School of Design in Chelsea Harbour and has been running her Interiors practice for 8 years. She is a highly original interior designer, styling modern and traditional residential and commercial spaces in conceptual ways, devising exciting schemes full of creative touches, and artfully juxtaposing vintage and antique classics with next generation design. The studio is currently designing several homes for singer songwriter Ellie Goulding in London and New York, a long-time client. Anna and her team also design high profile restaurants and bars across London, including Kricket in Soho, with Kricket Brixton & Kricket BBC Television Centre in production. Other recent openings include Claw Carnaby and Mam in Notting Hill. One particular career highlight, saw Anna collaborating with KLC to design a Fantasy Bedroom for the Queen in the Grounds of Buckingham Palace during the Coronation Festival. Anna holds a number of industry positions, including being Chair of KLC’s Alumni Advisory Board where she also lectures. She is a BIID Registered Interior Designer and sits on the BIID Membership Committee and was seen last year at the top table as one of Decorex International’s Interior Designer Brand Ambassadors.
Ciara graduated in fine art at NCAD Dublin, and her work led a natural progression into the world of interior architecture with a Masters of Arts in Interior Design at NESAD Boston. Having relocated to London in 2007, Ciara's design experience ranges from architectural to interior design studios working across commercial and residential sectors. She recently established her own interior design practice named studio RUUF, where they are currently working on a number of high end residential and workplace projects. Ciara is currently tutoring on the MA in interior Design at the National Design Academy and is also undertaking a qualification in garden design to further expand her design ethos. Moving countries periodically throughout her life has instilled in Ciara a passion to create designs with a strong identity, a unique sense of place and foster a greater sense of wellbeing through the users experience and understanding of space, form and personal connection.
Mathew is Creative Director at 33 Interiors and has been since its inception in 2013. During this time he has led numerous hospitality and high end residential schemes including developments in Chelsea, the city of London and Paddington. His approach to design always starts with a rich and detailed concept which is drives all of 33’s creative work. Current projects include hospitality sites in the UK and the UAE as well as residential schemes in the UK. His experience across all stages of a project, multiple sectors and varying budgets position him well to lead teams and exceed client expectations. Mathew is passionate about passing on his knowledge and nurturing the next generation, this ties in with his work as Director at the British Institute of Interior Design, where he is involved with the Institute’s work with students and educators.
