From the imperial splendour of a Qing imperial throne to the subtle aesthetic of a Song dynasty mallow dish, the V&A collection of Chinese lacquer is today one of the most comprehensive outside China. This lecture maps the history of the collection and collectors, highlighting the significant role played by leading private collectors and curators, stimulating interest in historical works and promoting contemporary craft production.
