The Offering of Christ in the Temple

A large retable group depicting the offering of Christ in the temple. The group comprises of Joseph beside the Virgin who is presenting the Christ child over the altar to the high priest who is stood beside John the Baptist. The figures in the foreground, flanking the altar are most likely donor figures. The relief would originally have been part of a very grand & important altarpiece. Originating from eastern France, possibly around the Alsace region, dated 1559 & of the period. Measures 106 x 78cm.
