Sir Terry Frost R.A. (British, 1915-2003) - 'Still Life with Blue Vase', signed and dated ‘Terry Frost 46’ (lower right), oil on paper. Presented in a fine and large heavy antique gilt frame.
Still Life with Blue Vase is an early painting from his period studying with Leonard Fuller in St Ives before Frost went to Camberwell Art College in 1947. His first art lessons were received from the artist Adrian Heath as they were prisoners of war together from 1941. One imagines it as a study, experimenting in composition, perspective and tone. Yet in this tutored work, Frost’s signature confident brushstrokes and bold colours are evident, and the striking blue vase and orange form are so indicative of what Frost would produce later. The picture has been well worked, with generous impasto, in contrast to his later works.
