Rare bronze bell helmet, dating to circa 1000 BC. Imagine a soldier wearing this helmet 3000 years ago, to protect himself against an enemy now unknown to us. To date, only twelve complete helmets of this type are known worldwide. Ten of these were acquired by museums, and only two are in private hands. This is one of those two.
The knob is decorated with horizontal lines and has a hole for the insertion of a plume. Along the rim are 11 rivet holes for fastening an organic inlay and possibly a chin strap. In excellent condition, completely unrestored.
The helmet comes from the collection of Axel Guttmann (1944-2001), a world famous collector of ancient arms and armour, and was published in 2001: H. Born – S. Hansen, Helme und Waffen Alteuropas, (Mainz, 2001)
