Marie Laurencin was an important figure in the Parisien avant-garde and a member of the Cubists associated with the Section d’Or, Pablo Picasso, Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Robert Delaunay, Henri le Fauconnier and Francis Picabia. She is often identified as the muse of the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Laurencin had important connections to the Salon of the American expatriate and famed lesbian writer Natalie Clifford Barney. She had both heterosexual and lesbian leanings.
This recently cleaned study is a beautiful example, very typical of her work.
